“Red wine hot chocolate” is a thing, and it’s about to become your go-to winter beverage

“Red wine hot chocolate” is a thing, and it’s about to become your go-to winter beverage

Wine is one of those things that makes everything better. Whether you’re into cheap wine, expensive wine, red wine, white wine, or some Jessica Day-approved slutty pink wine, it’s just one of the greatest alcoholic beverages out there. Red wines – the darker the better – are notoriously perfect wintry drink options. They warm you right up, and there are any number of red wine cocktail options beyond the traditional summer sangria. Mulled wine, served hot, is a personal favorite and is super popular in several European countries (in particular, at Christmas markets).

Any wine-lover knows that pairing red wine and chocolate is a match made in heaven. But, somehow, it never occurred to us to put red wine inside hot chocolate – until now, anyway.

Refinery29 unearthed this delish winter beverage that’s part-wine, part-hot cocoa, and all scrumptious.

Refinery29’s recipe comes from Kylie Mitchell of immaEATthat, a Houston-based eating disorder dietitian and food blogger. Mitchell first shared her recipe back in November 2014, and luckily, it seems super simple to put together.

The recipe only calls for three (or four, if you’re feeling fancy) ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cup milk

  • 1 cup red wine

  • 1/3 cup dark chocolate chunks

  • Optional: Coconut Whipped Cream

You just have to heat the milk in a sauce pan, slowly melting the dark chocolate in it, and then slowly mix in the red wine. That’s literally it. SO simple, but genius. Must try immediately.

Red wine + hot chocolate--need I say more?

Mitchell recommends serving the drink in smaller portions, since the red wine + dark chocolate combination makes this an incredibly rich drink. Basically, it’s not a “gulp it from your mug for warmth while you sit by a roaring fire” kind of beverage – it’s a sipping drink.

So go forth and brew yourself up some chocolatey alcohol liquid goodness. It’s sure to be a hit at your next holiday party (or you know, when you’re alone in bed watching Netflix).
