The Real Story Behind Kate Moss’ Iconic 90s Pink Hair Moment

It’s the photo that has launched a million Tumblr accounts: a luminous Kate Moss with glowing pink hair, tucked under the covers of her own bed. The week before, for Donatella Versace’s spring ’99 collection, colorist Laurie Foley had transformed Moss’s hair to match the “rose dust pink” of Versace’s accessories.

“It was all hush-hush,” recalls Foley. “They drove Kate in a car with a hat on and snuck her into the atelier, inside Gianni’s old spa in Milan. It took at least eight hours because we had to get that brunette off of her without damaging the hair.” Foley created a custom color to match the exact hue of the collection’s shoes and accessories. “They had a bright, yet dusty pink look to them, says Foley. “So, I took her all the way light and then I over-toned it with a beige, sparkly champagne toner to get that pinky-purple, dusty, vintage-inspired pink.”

A week later, Calvin Klein requested Moss return to brunette for his New York City show, and the day-long transformation back was captured by Moss’s good friend, photographer Juergen Teller. “We did it at Kate’s house and it was really relaxed,” said Moss’s London colorist Nicola Clarke. “Juergen Teller was there to document the whole thing. I had to bleach-bath the hair to remove the pink, add orange to pre-pigment, then to brown,” said Clarke. “It was a shame because Kate really loved the pink and the extreme change, but we needed to move on to the next look and afterwards she was happy.” Of Teller, Moss once reminisced: “I do get his twistedness.” And, thanks to that amazing day, so do we.
