Reading and Leeds organisers confirm 2021 festivals will go ahead

Reading and Leeds music festivals will be going ahead this year, organisers have confirmed.

It comes as the government laid out a timetable for the relaxing of COVID restrictions in England earlier this week.

A message from organisers on Twitter read: "Following the government's recent announcement, we can't wait to get back to the fields this summer. LET'S GO."

Stormzy, Post Malone and Liam Gallagher are set to headline the sister events which are slated to take place across the August Bank Holiday weekend from 27-29 August.

The government hopes to lift all remaining restrictions on social contact by 21 June at the earliest which could mean the reopening of nightclubs and the reemergence of large-scale events.

Reading will return to the Richfield Avenue venue while Leeds will once again take place in Bramham Park.

Reading and Leeds festivals were cancelled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, along with most live music events in the UK.

Last month saw Glastonbury Festival's organisers announce the event would not be taking place for the second year running.

A statement from Michael and Emily Eavis read: "With great regret, we must announce that this year’s Glastonbury Festival will not take place, and that this will be another enforced fallow year for us.

“In spite of our efforts to move Heaven & Earth, it has become clear that we simply will not be able to make the Festival happen this year. We are so sorry to let you all down.

“As with last year, we would like to offer all those who secured a ticket in October 2019 the opportunity to roll their £50 deposit over to next year, and guarantee the chance to buy a ticket for Glastonbury 2022.

“We are very appreciative of the faith and trust placed in us by those of you with deposits, and we are very confident we can deliver something really special for us all in 2022!"

Sir Paul McCartney, Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar had been named as headliners but it is not yet known if that will change for 2022.
