New Radicals to Reunite for Biden Inauguration Parade: 'This World Is Gonna Pull Through'

After over 20 years of separation, The New Radicals are set for a reunion on Inauguration Day. The band will come together Wednesday to perform their 1998 hit song "You Get What You Give" at the virtual event Parade Across America.

The rock group disbanded just a few months after the release of their Top 40 smash and have not performed since 1999. Gregg Alexander, lead singer and founder of the group, shares that they want this performance to act as a source of faith for viewers.

"If there's one thing on Earth that would possibly make us get the band together, if only for a day, it is the hope that our song could be even the tiniest beacon of light in such a dark time," Alexander, 50, said in a statement to Rolling Stone.

"You Get What You Give" has longstanding connections to the Biden-Harris administration, as it was the 2020 campaign trail walk-on song for Doug Emhoff, 56, the soon to be Second Gentleman to Vice President-elect, Kamala Harris, 56.

The song also has personal significance for incoming President Joe Biden. In his 2017 autobiography, Promise Me, Dad, Biden, 78, writes that "You Get What You Give" was a song of inspiration for his family as his late son Beau Biden battled the brain cancer that ultimately took his life.

"During breakfast, Beau would often make me listen to what I thought was his theme song, 'You Get What You Give' by the New Radicals," wrote Biden. "Even though Beau never stopped fighting and his will to live was stronger than most – I think he knew that this day might come. The words to the song are: 'This whole damn world can fall apart. You'll be OK, follow your heart.'"

Alexander said that it is a "huge honor" to preform their song at this event and the band has a "deep respect" for Beau Biden and his service in the military.

This Wednesday, Parade Across America will begin following the swearing-in ceremony of Biden and Harris. While the New Radicals will be the final act for the virtual inauguration parade, they received their invitation less than a week before the start of the event.

Alexander and bandmate Danielle Brisebois, 51, said it was a "mad, fun scramble" to plan this upcoming performance as the band has "high hopes" for what Biden and Harris will do for the country.

"America knows in its heart that things will get bright again with a new administration and a real plan for vaccines on the way," Alexander told Rolling Stone. "That's the message of the song … this world is gonna pull through."
