Prince Harry Didn’t Know ‘Unconscious Bias’ Existed Until He Met Meghan Markle

Prince Harry has discussed his journey of learning about race and racism, including acknowledging 'unconscious bias', which he says he only understood when he walked in his wife Meghan Markle's shoes.

The Duke of Sussex took part in a candid virtual conversation for British GQ with Patrick Hutchinson - a man recognisable to many people after he was seen in a viral image carrying a white counter-protester to safety during a Black Lives Matter march in London this summer.

In the newly-released video, the pair spoke of their mutual admiration for each other and delved into the Black Lives Matter movement - which has seen increased exposure this year since its launch in 2013 -, racism and privilege.

Prince Harry acknowledged that he had 'no idea' what unconscious bias was - something Hutchinson discussed encountering when trying to enter the job market when he was younger - and came to understand it when he met his wife Meghan, who is mixed race, and witnessed her experiences.

'Once you realise or you feel a little bit uncomfortable, then the onus is on you to go out and educate yourself, because ignorance is no longer an excuse,' Harry said. 'And unconscious bias, from my understanding, having the upbringing and the education that I had, I had no idea what it was. I had no idea it existed. And then, sad as it is to say, it took me many, many years to realise it, especially then living a day or a week in my wife's shoes.'

Since the death of George Floyd - which ultimately sparked the protests and marches Hutchinson was present at - Harry and Meghan have been using their platform to honestly discuss racism, push for greater diversity and better opportunities and lives for Black communities both in the UK and the US.
