Prince Albert, Sask., firefighters get 17% increase over 6 years

The City of Prince Albert, Sask., and its firefighters have agreed to a new six-year contract that includes a salary increase of 3.4 per cent a year for six years.

That's about 17 per cent more over the life of the contract.

The last contract between the two sides expired three years ago.

The firefighters' union has also agreed to new provisions which will save the city money.

Firefighters will no longer be able to rack up sick leave pay and then cash out on it when they retire.

They have also agreed to give up one year's worth of retro pay in the new contract.

Correction : A previous version of this story used an initial release from the city that incorrectly listed the increase as 2.9 per cent every year.(Aug 25, 2016 4:37 PM)
