Preview: 2018 Audi A5 Sportback

Preview: 2018 Audi A5 Sportback

Audi fans will recognize the name “A5,” but most shoppers will associate that alphanumeric moniker with a two-door coupe or convertible. With the all-new 2018 A5 and S5 Sportback, Audi now is affixing that label on a new four-door hatchback line that looks much like an Audi A7.

The new A5 Sportback gets a 252-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine matched to a seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission. The company claims this duo will sprint the A5 from 0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds.

The spicier S5 Sportback is powered by a 3.0-liter V6 engine that puts out 354 hp and is said to zip from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds. The S5 is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. No manual transmission will be offered. EPA fuel economy estimates were not available.

Both Sportback models come standard with all-wheel drive.

Audi says the new Sportback has seating for up to five passengers. Other interior details include an available Bang & Olufsen sound system and a standard panoramic sunroof.

Audi’s optional Virtual Cockpit takes the instrument cluster in a new, high-tech direction. This system replaces traditional gauges and displays with a high-resolution screen ahead of the driver. In our experience with this system in the redesigned Audi A4, we found that it offers the driver a lot of visual information. It can put a giant Google Map image right where the instrument cluster is commonly placed, or it can give you an enlarged view of your music library or phone contacts.

Audi says the new A5 has double the cargo capacity over the coupe version.

Standard safety equipment includes forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking. You can also opt for adaptive cruise control.

These models go on sale in spring 2017. Pricing has not been announced.
