Suspect shot by law enforcement serving a warrant in a Lexington homicide, chief says

A homicide suspect was shot Wednesday when a Lexington police officer helped the U.S. Marshals Service serve a murder warrant, Lexington police said.

Shots were fired around 10:11 a.m. in the 1600 bock of Thirlstane Court when law enforcement attempted to serve the warrant on a 31-year-old man, Police Chief Lawrence Weathers said. Thirlstane is in a residential area between Bryan Station and Winchester roads.

Police haven’t determined whether the officer or marshal shot the suspect, Lexington police Sgt. Donnell Gordon said. Weathers said he was unsure how many times the man was shot.

Weathers did not release the name of the wounded man. The chief would not comment on whether or not the man fired at police first and wouldn’t say if the man was armed.

“That’s all part of the investigation, so I really can’t say anything about that,” Weathers said.

The man was treated by officers on scene before an ambulance arrived, police said. An ambulance left the scene with a police escort.

The suspect was in stable condition as of Wednesday afternoon.

Police released few additional details at a Wednesday press conference. Police didn’t comment on whether or not the suspect lived at the home where the shooting happened. They also didn’t specify which Lexington homicide case was tied to the murder warrant.

“It’s still going to be an ongoing investigation,” Gordon said. “There’s a lot to be determined.”

The officer was wearing a body camera, Weathers said. He said state police and prosecutors will decide if the footage will be released to the public.

Weathers said at this point, it appears as though his officer followed the department’s use-of-force protocols.

“Everything’s preliminary — at this time, from my perspective, it appears they did (follow procedure),” he said. “But we have an external investigation and an internal investigation going on, and I’d really wait to finalize anything before saying that was accurate.”

The man was served with the murder warrant after the shooting, Weathers said. He was also charged with possessing a gun as a convicted felon.

The name of the officer involved hasn’t been released. He has been placed on paid administrative assignment. That’s standard practice for officers who are involved in shootings, Weathers said.

The shooting was being investigated by Kentucky State Police’s Critical Incident Response Team and the Lexington Police Department’s Public Integrity Unit. The officer will remain on administrative assignment until those investigations are completed.

“It’s going to be a long investigation,” Gordon said.
