New Place Ville Marie observation deck offers unique view of Montreal

Montrealers can now get a bird's eye view of the city — from atop Place Ville Marie.

The Montreal landmark's 44th, 45th and 46th floors are now open to the public, including an observation deck that provides a 360-degree view of the city.

Take a 30-second elevator ride to the 44th floor to dine at the restaurant, which has a four-season terrasse, complete with an urban garden and bay windows that are three-and-a-half metres high.

On the 45th floor, an interactive exhibition proposes uniquely Montreal activities to visitors such as a virtual Bixi ride along the Lachine Canal or climbing the stairs at St-Joseph's Oratory. It also features an interactive exhibition called #mtlgo.

There are 55 video portraits of Montrealers on display, with 11 themes such as hockey, food or neighbourhoods. A spectator can "like" the images and based on the number of "likes," results are tabulated and the guest is given a ticket with four missions to complete.

The 46th floor observation deck, which is 188 metres above the street, offers a view of downtown Montreal, the St. Lawrence River, the Jacques-Cartier Bridge, Mount Royal, the Olympic Stadium and huge green spaces. This summer, it will be open until 11 p.m. for the annual fireworks competition.

"It's a very unique thing because as much as the show is about the view, obviously, people have higher and higher expectations now, especially tourists. They want more. They want an experience. They want to learn, and this is what we do," says Yves Mayrand, president of GSM Project.

GSM Project, which created observation decks around the world for the last 10 years, had the idea to create one at PVM in Montreal.

"The main characteristic is that we wanted to create a place for Montrealers by Montrealers. Most observation decks are what you might call tourist traps. That's not what we wanted to do. We wanted to create a place that, whether you're a tourist or a local, it is very authentic," said Mayrand.

Admission price

It costs:

- $54 for a family pack (two adults with two children or one adult with three children)

- $19 per adult

- $15 per teenager

- $13 per child

- $50 annual unlimited membership per person

Construction of Place Ville Marie was completed in 1962. At the time, it was the tallest building in Canada.

The building now houses offices and a shopping centre.
