Pittsburgh-based steak, seafood restaurant opening this spring in south Charlotte

A Pittsburgh-based restaurant will make its Southeast debut next month in south Charlotte.

Walnut Grill expects to open the week after Easter Sunday at 15719 Brixham Hill Ave. in Ballantyne, Executive Chef and Charlotte native David Smith told The Charlotte Observer. It will be Walnut Grill’s 10th location. The space was formerly Stone Mountain Grill.

The American eatery bar and grill serves upscale fare in a casual setting, Smith said.

The 6,900-square-foot Charlotte site includes a patio with seating for about 50 people, which Smith said could be expanded in the next year.

Charlotte is ideal for the chain’s expansion because patio season is almost year-round, Smith said, plus the city’s culinary scene is growing.

What to expect

Walnut Grill’s menu includes steaks, seafood, salads and sandwiches. Among the popular dishes are walnut-crusted salmon and Parmesan chicken gnocchi, Smith said. Menus and prices vary slightly by city location.

The Charlotte menu also will include regional additions such as North Carolina trout and fried green tomatoes, Smith said.

The restaurant, with 13 televisions in the bar and patio areas, can seat over 200 people inside.

Walnut Grill will hire between 50 and 100 full- and part-time employees.

Off-site catering also will be available.

Walnut Grill had expected to open this month, according to the restaurant’s website and social media sites, but Smith said there have been delays, including waiting on permits.

More about Walnut Grill

The 24-year-old restaurant has six locations in western Pennsylvania near Pittsburgh and three in St. Louis.

Walnut Grill plans to open more restaurants in the Charlotte area, Smith said.
