Palo Alto Hotel Taps Shinola for Personalized Shopping Service

AT YOUR SERVICE: One Bay Area hotel hopes to distinguish itself from the pack by bringing a little Detroit to its guests.

Epiphany Hotel, part of Joie de Vivre Hotels, and Shinola have partnered for a personalized shopping service for hotel guests nearly a year after the Detroit company opened a door in Palo Alto, Calif., just steps away from Epiphany. The deal, which gets the Shinola brand integrated into the hospitality business, is hardly surprising. Shinola last month revealed it has plans to open a 130-room hotel — dubbed the Shinola Hotel — in fall 2018 to be located in downtown Detroit.

The deal with Epiphany is a good stepping stone into the hotel business for Shinola and could bear out in key learnings for its future property.

The new shopping program, named Shinola at Your Service, includes the option of having a private consultation with a personal shopper that can be scheduled either at the Palo Alto store or in a guest’s hotel room. A personalized selection of the company’s products are then presented to the guest based on the consultation. They then select and pay for only what they want and there’s an option for shipping. Guests who book the luxury suite receive a personalized Shinola journal, one of the products the company is known for along with its watches and bicycles.

Epiphany Hotel general manager Seth McDaniels said the partnership with Shinola is the property’s first foray into a shopping program. It has worked with brands such as BMW and high-end headphone maker Master & Dynamic among others in the past in a bid to broaden its audience.
