P.E.I. health officials announce new border measures to address Omicron variant

·1 min read

CHARLOTTETOWN — Prince Edward Island is imposing new border measures in an effort to block the spread of the Omicron variant of the novel coronavirus.

Effective 8 a.m. Friday, anyone arriving in P.E.I. from an international destination, including the United States, must be tested at their point of entry and again on the fourth day after they arrive.

Anyone returning from international travel won't be able to enter a long-term care or community care facility in P.E.I. until they've had three negative COVID-19 tests.

Children under the age of 12 will be banned from travelling out of province to participate in sports tournaments or arts and culture events — the same rule that Nova Scotia announced on Wednesday.

Officials say the new rules will be re-evaluated in early January.

The province reported one new case of COVID-19 Thursday, bringing the number of active cases to 25.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 2, 2021.
