The one-year returns have been splendid for China Xiangtai Food (NASDAQ:PLIN) shareholders despite underlying losses increasing

When you buy shares in a company, there is always a risk that the price drops to zero. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. For example, the China Xiangtai Food Co., Ltd. (NASDAQ:PLIN) share price has soared 256% in the last 1 year. Most would be very happy with that, especially in just one year! Also pleasing for shareholders was the 169% gain in the last three months. Note that businesses generally develop over the long term, so the returns over the last year might not reflect a long term trend.

Since it's been a strong week for China Xiangtai Food shareholders, let's have a look at trend of the longer term fundamentals.

China Xiangtai Food isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

China Xiangtai Food grew its revenue by 232% last year. That's a head and shoulders above most loss-making companies. And the share price has responded, gaining 256% as we previously mentioned. It's great to see strong revenue growth, but the question is whether it can be sustained. Given the positive sentiment around the stock we're cautious, but there's no doubt its worth watching.

It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that China Xiangtai Food shareholders have gained 256% over the last year. And the share price momentum remains respectable, with a gain of 169% in the last three months. Demand for the stock from multiple parties is pushing the price higher; it could be that word is getting out about its virtues as a business. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
