Old Port not attractive to tourists, says Projet Montréal

Montreal is not doing enough to make the Old Port attractive to tourists, City Hall Opposition Leader Luc Ferrandez said Thursday.

Projet Montréal's Ferrandez says the Old Port is hard to find for tourists who take the Metro and that because of construction isn't inviting once they get there.

He says signs should be clearly visible from the Metro to point people in the direction of the Old Port.

And when people arrive they should see lights, benches, flowers and creative ways to cover the construction going on in the area.

He adds that having signs telling people businesses are open during construction isn't good enough. Ferrandez wants to see panels and coverings that show what sites usually look like, or will look like after construction.

That's what cities like New York and Paris do, Ferrandez says, and if Montreal wants to compete for tourists it should follow their example.

Ferrandez says the city has a month to get ready for the tourist season and wants City Hall to be proactive in finding solutions rather than wait until people and businesses put pressure on officials to do something.
