Obama: We need a united America

President Barack Obama stressed the importance of a united America on Thursday, hours before Donald Trump was set to officially accept the GOP nomination.

"We have to affirm that in this country, it is our obligation to abide by the law, to look out for each other, to be part of a single community, and that we can still appreciate our differences," Obama said in a speech at the White House, celebrating the Eid al-Fitr Muslim holiday.

Throughout his campaign, Trump has used anti-Muslim rhetoric that, while it has resonated with many in the GOP, has raised eyebrows with others.

"We've got to rededicate ourselves to making sure no American feels isolated, or second-class citizens," Obama said.
