NXP Semiconductors (NASDAQ:NXPI) Is Paying Out A Larger Dividend Than Last Year

The board of NXP Semiconductors N.V. (NASDAQ:NXPI) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of $1.01 on the 6th of July, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This makes the dividend yield 2.2%, which is above the industry average.

NXP Semiconductors' Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage

We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. Before making this announcement, NXP Semiconductors was easily earning enough to cover the dividend. This means that most of what the business earns is being used to help it grow.

The next year is set to see EPS grow by 31.8%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 37% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

NXP Semiconductors Is Still Building Its Track Record

NXP Semiconductors' dividend has been pretty stable for a little while now, but we will continue to be cautious until it has been demonstrated for a few more years. The annual payment during the last 5 years was $1.00 in 2018, and the most recent fiscal year payment was $4.06. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 32% per annum over that time. It is always nice to see strong dividend growth, but with such a short payment history we wouldn't be inclined to rely on it until a longer track record can be developed.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

The company's investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time. NXP Semiconductors has impressed us by growing EPS at 30% per year over the past five years. Earnings per share is growing at a solid clip, and the payout ratio is low which we think is an ideal combination in a dividend stock as the company can quite easily raise the dividend in the future.

NXP Semiconductors Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock

In summary, it is always positive to see the dividend being increased, and we are particularly pleased with its overall sustainability. Earnings are easily covering distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. However, there are other things to consider for investors when analysing stock performance. Taking the debate a bit further, we've identified 3 warning signs for NXP Semiconductors that investors need to be conscious of moving forward.
