The Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NYSE:NCLH) Share Price Is Up 51% And Shareholders Are Holding On

By buying an index fund, you can roughly match the market return with ease. But if you buy good businesses at attractive prices, your portfolio returns could exceed the average market return. For example, the Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. (NYSE:NCLH) share price is up 51% in the last three years, clearly besting than the market return of around 38% (not including dividends). On the other hand, the returns haven't been quite so good recently, with shareholders up just 1.1%.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During three years of share price growth, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings achieved compound earnings per share growth of 26% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 15% average annual increase in the share price. So one could reasonably conclude that the market has cooled on the stock.

You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

A Different Perspective

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings shareholders are up 1.1% for the year. But that was short of the market average. On the bright side, the longer term returns (running at about 8.1% a year, over half a decade) look better. It may well be that this is a business worth popping on the watching, given the continuing positive reception, over time, from the market.
