No. 10 Villanova loses starting PG Collin Gillespie to MCL tear

Collin Gillespie got tough news on Thursday.

MRI results confirmed that the Villanova point guard suffered a torn medial collateral ligament in his left knee during Wednesday's win over No. 14 Creighton. He will not be available for the upcoming NCAA tournament. The injury also marks the end of his Villanova career.

"We are all devastated for Collin," Villanova head coach Jay Wright said, per a team statement. "He is the heart and soul of our program. We know we can't replace him. We all just want to step up and play so that we honor him.

"Collin is as mentally tough and resilient as any player we have had here. I know he will get through this and make it a positive for his career."

Big blow to Villanova's NCAA hopes

A senior, Gillespie averaged 14 points, 4.6 assists and 3.3 rebounds this season. He's one of five finalists for the Bob Cousy award honoring the nation's best point guard.

Gillespie won an NCAA championship as a freshman in 2018 coming off the bench for Villanova. He's not considered a prospect for the NBA draft.

The loss of Gillespie is a big blow to the Wildcats' hopes of returning to the Final Four.
