There’s plenty ahead this week in football, with UNC going to Notre Dame, N.C. State hosting Louisville and Duke playing at Wake Forest. The Hurricanes, with the N.C. State Fair closing up, will have four straight home games at PNC Arena — against Toronto, Boston, Chicago and Washington. Better keep the remote handy.
Canes’ Andersen gets shot at old team
It will be Frederik Andersen’s turn Monday. The Canes’ goalie, who was not re-signed by the Toronto Maple Leafs after last season, should be in net against the Leafs — albeit at PNC Arena, not returning to Toronto.
No hard feelings about the way things ended in Toronto, Andersen said. “I think I’m just happy to be playing hockey down here,” he said. “My main thing is feeling good, feeling healthy and enjoying playing hockey. That’s the most important thing.”
Tar Heels after third win in Notre Dame series
Before the 2021 season began, there was the thought the Carolina-Notre Dame game potentially could match top-10 teams. Then the season began and that thought quickly went away.
UNC and Notre Dame have played 20 times in football. The Irish have won 18. Both UNC victories have been at Kenan Stadium: 12-7 in October 1960 when the Tar Heels intercepted five passes, then 29-24 in 2008 when UNC was No. 22 in the polls.
Cameron Indoor Stadium rocking again
Who’s ready for some basketball? The Blue Devils will be the first to take the court Saturday, taking on Winston-Salem State in a men’s exhibition game at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The old gym was rocking with COVID-19 restrictions eased and Cameron again filled for the Countdown to Craziness on Oct. 15. It was the first time in 18 months fans were allowed in Cameron — Banchero called the atmosphere unreal and surreal — and it should be packed again for the afternoon exhibition game.
