Neighbours to address Australia Day controversy in new storyline for Terese Willis

From Digital Spy

Neighbours spoilers follow for UK and Australian viewers.

Neighbours is set to address the controversy surrounding Australia Day as part of an upcoming storyline involving Terese Willis.

For years now, the 'Change the Date' campaign has urged that the event – which celebrates all things Down Under – should be moved to later on in the year.

The reason? Because January 26, the day it currently takes place on, coincides with Captain James Cook arriving in Australia and declaring it as a British colony back in 1770.

According to a new issue of TV Week, Terese (Rebekah Elmaloglou) is set to declare that the Lassiters won't be hosting any Australia Day parties this year as she "knows that supporting the Erinsborough Council campaign is the right thing to do" and wants to ensure that the family are "supportive of the movement".

That said, she wasn't always a backer of the change, and will be left mortified when her history regarding the matter is exposed by lawyer Tim Collins (Ben Anderson).

"Terese is disappointed by her past statements," Elmaloglou said. "She no longer stands by her comments, but knows she has to take responsibility for the things she's said. After speaking to Jacinta, she knows that apologising is very important."

"[It] is an inappropriate day to hold national celebrations," the United Nations Associations of Australia states on its website. "This is a solemn day for Indigenous Australians, which marks the beginning of the genocide against their ancestors, culture and language, of which the impacts are still being felt today."

Neighbours airs weekdays on Channel 5 (UK) and 10 Peach (Australia).
