NC State student dies after being hit by car near campus, police say

A student at N.C. State University has died after he was hit by a car near campus Sunday.

Benjamin DeRose, 21, suffered serious injuries in an accident early on Sunday morning, police said. According to an online fundraiser to cover his funeral expenses, DeRose was a student at N.C. State.

Police said DeRose was hit by a car at the intersection of Varsity Drive and Crest Road at approximately 2:45 a.m.

The car, a 2008 Acura, was traveling southeast on Varsity Drive, and was turning right onto Crest Road when it struck DeRose, according to a wreck report released by Raleigh police.

The police report said DeRose was running along Crest Road at “a point where there is no crosswalk, not at the intersection,” when he was struck by the car.

The driver of the car has been identified, according to the report, but no charges have been filed as the investigation into the crash remains ongoing, police spokesperson Laura Hourigan said.

An online fundraiser on the website GoFundMe had raised $38,920 as of Wednesday, and according to organizer Trace Faulk, the money will be spent on funeral expenses and a memorial scholarship at N.C. State, the fundraiser’s website says.

“We care a lot for the DeRose family and Ben is going to be greatly missed,” the website states. “He touched everyone in a positive way and shined a light in this world.”

A vigil for DeRose will be held Wednesday outside of the Talley Student Union at 8:30 p.m., according to WRAL.
