NBA, DMX, Mega Millions among Google's top US trending searches of 2021

What topics dominated Google search in 2021? Professional basketball and money.

The NBA was the most popular trending search in the U.S. this year, according to data released Wednesday by Google.

Second on the list was DMX, the rap icon who died in April after suffering a heart attack.

Gabby Petito was third on Google's list. Petito was a YouTube star whose murder captured nationwide attention.

Trending searches related to money were higher this year. "Mega Millions," "AMC stock" and "stimulus check" ranked in the top 10 of overall trending searches and top three trending News searches in the U.S.

Mega Millions lottery jackpots reached new heights this year, most recently capped by one winning ticket in October claiming a $700 million prize, the seventh largest in U.S. lottery history. Meanwhile, AMC was one of several meme stocks that surged in popularity this year.

Google says their 2021 search lists are based on terms with the highest spike this year compared to the previous year.
