Nanoco Group's (LON:NANO) investors will be pleased with their impressive 275% return over the last three years

It might seem bad, but the worst that can happen when you buy a stock (without leverage) is that its share price goes to zero. But if you buy shares in a really great company, you can more than double your money. For instance the Nanoco Group plc (LON:NANO) share price is 275% higher than it was three years ago. Most would be happy with that. On top of that, the share price is up 21% in about a quarter.

With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.

Given that Nanoco Group didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

Nanoco Group actually saw its revenue drop by 48% per year over three years. So we wouldn't have expected the share price to gain 55% per year, but it has. It's fair to say shareholders are definitely counting on a bright future.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Nanoco Group shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 118% over the last year. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 10%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 5 warning signs for Nanoco Group (of which 1 is significant!) you should know about.
