Music Industry Maven Jason Flom Lists Aspen Mini-Mansion

SELLER: Jason Flom
LOCATON: Aspen, Colo.
PRICE: $7.875 million
SIZE: 7,806 square feet, 6 bedrooms, 6.5 bathrooms

YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: Amid a contentious, five-plus-year divorce battle, low-key but highly influential veteran music industry mover-and-shaker Jason Flom has his family getaway in the celeb-favored ski resort community of Aspen, Colo., up for sale. Originally listed at $8.25 million, the nearly three-quarters of an acre property in the fancy-pants Glen Eagles neighborhood about 2.5 miles outside of downtown was recently given a substantial price-chop to $7.875 million.

Mister Flom, the former CEO of Atlantic, Capital and Virgin Records and currently the founder and CEO of Lava Records, may not be a household name outside the music industrial complex, but in 2012 no less than the New Yorker described him as “one of the most successful record men of the past 20 years.” Among a successful slew of radio-friendly artists and acts, we all have him to thank — or curse, depending on one’s musical tastes and pop cultural point of view — for discovering and/or signing soon-to-be disbanded ‘80s hair band Twisted Sister, folk-pop singer-songwriter Jewel, country rocker Kid Rock and a handful of top-selling pop stars who include Jessie J, Lorde and Katy Perry.

Purchased per property records by Mister Flom and his estranged wife, former A&R executive Wendy Berry Flom, in June 2004 for $6.475 million, current listing details show the mini-mansion measures in at an ample and well-appointed if — in our utterly meaningless opinion — decoratively dated 7,806 square feet with six bedrooms and 6.5 bathrooms. A decidedly theatrical, double-height living room with massive, inglenook-style stone fireplace and three towering walls of windows is joined by a dining room that’s open to a roomy and well-equipped if — again, in our utterly meaningless opinion — stylistically quotidian center island kitchen. A separate and fully carpeted family room includes a bar area and a built-in entertainment unit with supersized television while an oversized laundry room has three — three! — sets of stacked washers and dryers. Several of the guest/family bedrooms, at least four of which have unfortunate forest green wall-to-wall carpeting, have direct access to the outdoors, as does the upper-level master suite that opens to a private deck with freestanding spa. Surrounded by dense woods, the landscaped areas around the house include rolling lawns, flowering gardens, tree-shaded terraces, a half-court basketball court, a sunken trampoline, a second spa set at the woods’ edge and, in lieu of a more traditional tree house, a ski-lift gondola that hangs from a custom mount.

Based on recent media reports, Mister Flom lives primarily in New York City, where he rents an swanky condo on the 67th floor of the same Upper West Side highrise where Sean “Diddy” Combs owns a louche spread he’s had on and off the market for about three years. (Originally priced at $8.5 million, Puffy’s place is currently listed at $7.5 million.)
