Sarah Hyland has joined the cast of ABC's upcoming fairytale drama Epic.

The actor, who is best known for playing Haley Dunphy in mockumentary comedy series Modern Family, will be seen opposite Little Voice's Brittany O'Grady and Holby City's Eleanor Fanyinka, whose involvement in the project was announced last month, on screen.

Created by Once Upon a Time's Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, the show has been described as a romantic anthology set to reinvent the way classic fantasy tales are told.

Hyland will play Rose, according to Deadline. Rose is a seemingly stereotypical princess who is gearing up to marry her Prince Charming in her instalment – which, like all of the others, was penned by Once Upon a Time writer Brigitte Hales.

But Rose's 'happily ever after' starts to look more and more like a distant dream when he starts to have second thoughts and Rose, desperate to try and hang on to the good times, accidentally exposes herself to an unexpected world.

Meanwhile, Fanyinka, who played Morven Digby on Holby, has been cast as The Seer, a mysterious and playful figure who leads others down the path of true love.

James Griffiths (Black-ish) has been lined up to direct the pilot. It's being reported that Epic is not being considered for the autumn/winter 2021 TV schedule.

Across her career, Hyland has also appeared in titles such as Vampire Academy, Disney's animated series The Lion Guard, Lipstick Jungle and Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments.

Modern Family aired on ABC in the US, and Sky One and NOW in the UK.
