While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During the five years of share price growth, MEG Energy moved from a loss to profitability. That kind of transition can be an inflection point that justifies a strong share price gain, just as we have seen here. Since the company was unprofitable five years ago, but not three years ago, it's worth taking a look at the returns in the last three years, too. Indeed, the MEG Energy share price has gained 218% in three years. Meanwhile, EPS is up 125% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 47% average annual increase in the share price over the same three years. Therefore, it seems the market has moderated its expectations for growth, somewhat.

MEG Energy shareholders gained a total return of 5.1% during the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. It's probably a good sign that the company has an even better long term track record, having provided shareholders with an annual TSR of 38% over five years. It may well be that this is a business worth popping on the watching, given the continuing positive reception, over time, from the market.
