The McLaren Senna Set a New VIR Lap Record

From Road & Track

Our sister publication Car and Driver just held its 13th annual Lightning Lap at Virginia International Raceway. This year brought out a whole bunch of cool machines, some of which broke records. If you have some time, you should definitely read about it. The fastest car of the event, the McLaren Senna, managed to set the outright track record for production cars on the Grand Course West layout by over two seconds.

The 2:34.9 time bests the lap set by now-retired Chevrolet engineer Jim Mero behind the wheel of the previous record-holder, a C7-generation Corvette ZR1 equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission. That's not totally surprising. After all, the Senna is a purpose-built track machine with more horsepower, more aero, and a lot less weight to move around. It's also several times more expensive than the Corvette, with Car and Driver's loaner car coming in at a staggering $982,816 as tested. Still, 2.35 seconds is a lot of time in a single lap. Watch the in-cabin video for yourself, and hold on tight.
