UPDATE 10/10/18: Mazda has released official info on the updated CX-5 for Japan, confirming that the turbocharged 2.5-liter engine will join the lineup. Photos of the new Japanese CX-5 XD Exclusive Mode variant, which has nicer interior materials and some other visual tweaks, seem to foretell what's in store for the upcoming Signature trim level. The CX-5 also receives a new version of Mazda's G-Vectoring Control, which now adds braking force to the outside wheels when the driver straightens the steering angle after a corner, supposedly helping to stabilize the vehicle. A Mazda spokesperson told C/D that there will be an official announcement about updates for the U.S. market before the Los Angeles auto show at the end of November.

Mazda's new turbocharged engine is making its way into more and more models, and it looks like the CX-5 crossover is next. A dealership document posted to Reddit shows that the 2019 Mazda CX-5 will adopt the turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder from the Mazda 6 and Mazda CX-9 for its top trim levels.

We presume the engine will make the same 250 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque as it does in the 6 sedan and the CX-9 three-row SUV. The Canadian document shows it as available on upper trim levels including the Grand Touring and a new Signature trim that will be added to the lineup to mirror the top 6 and CX-9 models. The turbo will likely be offered with either front- or all-wheel drive and with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Among other new features for 2019, according to the document, are Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Mazda's G-Vectoring Control, cooled front seats, a revised gauge cluster, and power-folding mirrors. The Signature is also likely to adopt a few glitzier bits of interior and exterior trim to set it above the Grand Touring, which is currently the top trim level. We don't expect any changes to the CX-5's base engine, a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder with cylinder deactivation that was added for 2018.

There's still no word on the availability of the long-awaited turbo-diesel version of the CX-5. Although the EPA released official fuel-economy estimates for a 2018 model CX-5 diesel earlier this year, Mazda has not said anything about when this variant will go on sale. In Japan, the updated CX-5 diesel gains a six-speed manual transmission option, which seems unlikely for the U.S.

C/D will keep an eye out for any other information on updates to the 2019 Mazda CX-5 and will update this post as new details become available.
