Matthew Broderick Joins Broadway Comedy ‘Sylvia’

Matthew Broderick, the two-time Tony winner who appeared in last season’s hit “It’s Only a Play,” will round out the cast of “Sylvia,” the new production of the A.R. Gurney comedy that opens in the October.

Broderick, who’ll play a dog owner in the middle of a mid-life crisis in the play, joins a project that’s already closely associate with his wife, Sarah Jessica Parker — she starred in the show’s world premiere Off Broadway in 1995. Parker portrayed the titular dog, a role to be played this fall by Annaleigh Ashford (“Masters of Sex”), who won a Tony in the spring for her turn in “You Can’t Take It With You.”

Ashford was previously announced to star in the show alongside Julie White (“The Little Dog Laughed”), who’ll play the wife of Broderick’s character. Robert Sella also appears in the production, directed by Broadway regular Daniel Sullivan (“Proof”).

Comedy was hot on Broadway last season, with “It’s Only a Play” and “Fish in the Dark” dominating the straight-play sales charts with the help of starry casts. Although Broderick can be a sales powerhouse when he teams with his co-star in the original cast of “The Producers,” Nathan Lane (in projects such as “It’s Only a Play” and “The Odd Couple”), his box office muscle is somewhat less certain without Lane.

The actor has a long Broadway history with a list of credits that includes “Torch Song Trilogy,” “Brighton Beach Memoirs” and “Nice Work If You Can Get It.” In film, he recently appeared in Neil LaBute’s “Dirty Weekend” and is among the cast of the upcoming, untitled project from writer-director-star Warren Beatty.

Produced by Jeffrey Richards, Jerry Frankel and Daryl Roth, “Sylvia” has shifted its timeline slightly, with the show now beginning previews Oct. 2 prior to an Oct. 27 opening at the Cort Theater. “Fish in the Dark” will wrap up its limited engagement at the theater Aug. 1.
