Vigil spoilers follow.

Vigil star Martin Compston has responded to a fan who complained about the BBC One drama's conclusion on Sunday night (September 26).

The finale of the BBC drama did prove to be divisive, with some viewers feeling underwhelmed by the episode and others calling for a second series.

On Twitter, Compston replied to one user who criticised Vigil's ending and the conclusion to his other hit BBC series Line of Duty, writing: "I know Dave pal I've made an arse of it. One the biggest new drama of the year the other biggest drama of the year/century. Agents for the sack."

Compston is right about Vigil's success as after the first episode aired, the BBC said it was now their "most-watched new drama of the year so far".

The BBC Press Office Twitter account then confirmed: "Episode one of Vigil has attracted an audience of 10.2 million viewers across its first 7 days, making it the BBC's most watched new drama of the year so far."

From the producers of Line of Duty and Bodyguard, the thriller series centred on Amy Silva (Gentleman Jack's Suranne Jones), a Scotland-based detective chief inspector who's tasked with boarding a nuclear-powered naval submarine after one of its crew members dies in mysterious circumstances.

Compston played Craig Burke, the crew member whose death was being investigated.

The star-studded cast also included Endeavour's Shaun Evans, Casualty and Timeless' Paterson Joseph, and Game of Thrones' Rose Leslie.

Though a murder mystery was at the center of the drama, the show's creator Tom Edge previously claimed that there's "another way to read the show" beyond it being a whodunnit.

"I think there are a few different ways that you can enjoy the show; which is about Amy's journey as she goes from being a land-dwelling person, whose life is quite compartmentalised into work and her relationship with the child in her life, and her emotional life over there," he explained.

"She works hard to keep those things apart and then, in a way, that kind of felt very mythical: she's swallowed into the belly of the beast and taken down into this kind of underworld, placed under huge pressure, with everything that allows her to function normally stripped away from her.

"There are no colleagues; no databases; there's no authority in terms of her capacity to run things. She has to go to sleep behind this tiny thin curtain; her medication runs out as the days are extended, and she's progressively shorn of all of the things that help her in her head and feel like she can do her job professionally, and cope, and survive."

Vigil is available to pre-order on DVD ahead of its October 4 release date. You can also catch up on the series via BBC iPlayer.
