The Toronto Maple Leafs will have a university goalie on their bench for Saturday's game against the Ottawa Senators.
Toronto is signing University of Toronto goaltender Alex Bishop to an Amateur Try-Out contract, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, and he will serve as a backup for Jack Campbell at Scotiabank Arena.
TOR is signing Alex Bishop from the University of Toronto to a ATO. He’s replacing the injured Petr Mrazek as Jack Campbell’s backup tonight. Due to cap constraints, they can’t (yet) call up someone from the AHL Marlies…

As reported by Friedman, Bishop will replace Petr Mrazek, who left Thursday’s contest in Ottawa after suffering a groin injury.
Mrazek’s ailment is not believed to be serious enough to place him on long-term injury reserve, which would free up a roster spot and the necessary cap space to call up Toronto Marlies netminder Michael Hutchinson. With Justin Holl also unavailable and in need of replacement, paired with a tight cap space, the Leafs opted to sign the U of T goalie instead.
Bishop, a 24-year-old native of Richmond Hill, Ont., has featured for the University of Toronto Varsity Blues since 2018. He played major junior in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, where he split 72 career games between the Saint John Sea Dogs, Quebec Remparts and Val-d’Or Foreurs.
The top goalie for the U of T team, Bishop sported a .922 save percentage in his sophomore year, making OUA All-Star second team.
