How Many DTE Energy Company (NYSE:DTE) Shares Have Insiders Sold, In The Last Year?

We often see insiders buying up shares in companies that perform well over the long term. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of examples of share prices declining precipitously after insiders have sold shares. So shareholders might well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in DTE Energy Company (NYSE:DTE).

What Is Insider Buying?

It's quite normal to see company insiders, such as board members, trading in company stock, from time to time. However, such insiders must disclose their trading activities, and not trade on inside information.

We don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions. But it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing. As Peter Lynch said, 'insiders might sell their shares for any number of reasons, but they buy them for only one: they think the price will rise.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At DTE Energy

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the insider, Mark Stiers, sold US$1.3m worth of shares at a price of US$131 per share. So what is clear is that an insider saw fit to sell at around the current price of US$129. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. We note that this sale took place at around the current price, so it isn't a major concern, though it's hardly a good sign.

In the last twelve months insiders purchased 3537 shares for US$448k. But they sold 32093.22 for US$4.1m. All up, insiders sold more shares in DTE Energy than they bought, over the last year. You can see the insider transactions (by individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. If you want to know exactly who sold, for how much, and when, simply click on the graph below!

I will like DTE Energy better if I see some big insider buys. While we wait, check out this free list of growing companies with considerable, recent, insider buying.

Insiders at DTE Energy Have Sold Stock Recently

We've seen more insider selling than insider buying at DTE Energy recently. In that time, insider Mark Stiers dumped US$1.3m worth of shares. Meanwhile insider Gary Torgow bought US$200k worth. Because the selling vastly outweighs the buying, we'd say this is a somewhat bearish sign.

Insider Ownership of DTE Energy

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. DTE Energy insiders own 0.6% of the company, currently worth about US$152m based on the recent share price. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.

So What Do The DTE Energy Insider Transactions Indicate?

The insider sales have outweighed the insider buying, at DTE Energy, in the last three months. Despite some insider buying, the longer term picture doesn't make us feel much more positive. The company boasts high insider ownership, but we're a little hesitant, given the history of share sales. Of course, the future is what matters most.
