Manitoba Public Insurance received 300 hail claims from storm

Manitoba's public auto insurer says it has received almost 300 hail-related claims as a result of this weekend's storms, which lashed southeastern and south-central Manitoba.

A Manitoba Public Insurance spokesperson told CBC News "a good percentage" of the hail claims come from the Beaconia Beach area, where softball-sized hail fell early Saturday morning.

Among those in Beaconia Beach whose vehicles were damaged were Adam and Stephanie Barchak, who have a cottage in the community along the southern shore of Lake Winnipeg.

Adam Barchak said hail damaged his car's windshield, while Stephanie Barchak said it damaged the walls of their cottage, ruined her garden and poked holes in their gazebo's roof.

"Gazebo … roof is completely done — the holes, lots of big holes in the roof from the hail," she said.

Beaconia also saw the highest rainfall total from Saturday's storms: about 140 millimetres, compared to 70-90 mm reported in some parts of Winnipeg that day.

Environment Canada says hailstones almost the size of baseballs were found in Silver Falls, southeast of Pine Falls, on Saturday morning.

Hail larger than golf balls was reported in Matlock, while quarter-sized hail fell in the Teulon, Oakbank, Cooks Creek and Jessica Lake areas, the weather agency added. Toonie-sized hailstones were spotted in south Winnipeg just before noon on Saturday.

The weekend storms also brought down trees, and in some cases bringing down power lines and damaging cars.

MPI says it's working on compiling a total number of trees falling on vehicles.
