Man Turns Blue IKEA Bags into Ultralight Backpack

From Popular Mechanics

It's not just IKEA's ubiquitous cheap furniture that has become an icon of modern life. Even the peripherals of the IKEA experience, like those confusing instructions, are familiar to millions. Recently, SanDiegoMitch figured out how to turn another piece of it-the IKEA blue bag-into something special: an ultralight pack.

"I went with a rolltop clip system," Mitch says on his website, "as it seemed like an easy way to keep the bag waterproof, and I was unfamiliar with it." With only three bags and lots of sewing, he was able to construct a backpack weighing only 17 oz. It's terrific for a backpack considering how each bag, Mitch notes, is able to rated to hold 55 pounds.

The backpack cost him only $30 to make and he's since sold it on eBay for $275. But he's also posted instructions online so you could make your own. If your relationship and sanity can survive the trip to IKEA, that is.
