Magellan Aerospace (TSE:MAL) Has Announced That Its Dividend Will Be Reduced To CA$0.05

Magellan Aerospace Corporation's (TSE:MAL) dividend is being reduced from last year's payment covering the same period to CA$0.05 on the 29th of September. The dividend yield of 4.4% is still a nice boost to shareholder returns, despite the cut.

Magellan Aerospace Might Find It Hard To Continue The Dividend

While it is great to have a strong dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is sustainable. Magellan Aerospace isn't generating any profits, and it is paying out a very high proportion of the cash it is earning. This is quite a strong warning sign that the dividend may not be sustainable.

Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 76.6% over the next year. This is the right direction to be moving, but it is not enough to achieve profitability. Unless this can be done in short order, the dividend might be difficult to sustain.

Magellan Aerospace Is Still Building Its Track Record

The dividend's track record has been pretty solid, but with only 9 years of history we want to see a few more years of history before making any solid conclusions. Since 2013, the annual payment back then was CA$0.12, compared to the most recent full-year payment of CA$0.32. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 12% a year over that time. It is always nice to see strong dividend growth, but with such a short payment history we wouldn't be inclined to rely on it until a longer track record can be developed.

The Dividend Has Limited Growth Potential

Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. However, things aren't all that rosy. Over the past five years, it looks as though Magellan Aerospace's EPS has declined at around 48% a year. Dividend payments are likely to come under some pressure unless EPS can pull out of the nosedive it is in. On the bright side, earnings are predicted to gain some ground over the next year, but until this turns into a pattern we wouldn't be feeling too comfortable.

Magellan Aerospace's Dividend Doesn't Look Great

Overall, the dividend looks like it may have been a bit high, which explains why it has now been cut. The company's earnings aren't high enough to be making such big distributions, and it isn't backed up by strong growth or consistency either. Overall, the dividend is not reliable enough to make this a good income stock.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company. Taking the debate a bit further, we've identified 1 warning sign for Magellan Aerospace that investors need to be conscious of moving forward.
