Looking for a holiday photo op? Wander through this brilliant Olathe wonderland

A new outdoor holiday light display has gone up in Olathe. KC Wine Co., which also runs the KC Pumpkin Patch, started its Walkin’ Winter Wonderland walk-through light display Nov. 26. It will run Fridays through Sundays until Dec. 19.

Tickets for the outdoor event are timed to start at various intervals to keep the display from getting too crowded.

Last year, the company had a drive-thru event, but this year’s light display is strictly walkable.

The lights in the display vary, with several walk-through light tunnels, as well as bright figures of gingerbread people, Santa plowing a field of corn and other festive shapes.

Taylor Roesch, event coordinator for KC Wine Co., said some of the light tunnels are 100 feet long.

“It’s going to definitely be Instagram-worthy,” Roesch said.

Workers started decorating trees, structures and even a few classic cars on the property before Halloween to make the display happen. Several stops along the way are structured specifically to be photo ops for people.

Near the start of the display, children can have a distanced visit with Santa, too.

“It’s going to be a great way to get outdoors in that one last stretch before it gets too cold,” Roesch said.

Although many of KC Wine Co.’s events are strictly for adults, this one is open to all ages.

“One thing that makes this really unique is that it’s family-friendly,” Roesch said.

Part of the proceeds from the event will go to the Veterans Community Project. It’s a cause close to Roesch’s family. Her father is retired from the Air Force, while her brother is on active duty with the Air Force, stationed in Japan.

“We love what (the project is) doing,” Roesch said.

The first weekend drew people from all over the area. Drew Reding brought his family out from Ottawa.

“We came here for the pumpkin patch and really liked it,” Reding said. “My favorite part is seeing my kids get excited.”

Overland Park residents Lydia and Maria Lopez said the length of the path of lights was just right for their 5-year-old son, Jonah.

“It’s not too long, because it’s cold, and kids don’t last too long,” Lydia Lopez said.

Fifteen-year-old Emma Moore of Olathe had fun posing for photos with her friend, Anna Hord, 14.

“I think it’s really pretty, and they did a really good job,” Emma said.

When attendees are done walking through the lights, a heated indoor barn concessions area will sell wine, hard cider, hot cocoa and soft drinks, as well as kettle corn and cookies.

The display is located at the site for the KC Pumpkin Patch, 13875 S. Gardner Road in Olathe. Tickets are $12 for those 2 years and older. For more ticket information, visit kcwineco.myshopify.com.
