London Covid cases by borough revealed as coronavirus infections continue to fall

Covid-19 cases are tumbling in London with five boroughs seeing a seven-day rate of less than 30 confirmed new infections per 100,000 in a week, official figures reveal today.

They show the lowest seven-day rate was in Lewisham, on 23.9, in the week to March 3.

Bromley had a rate of 25.6, Islington 26, Camden 28.9 and Haringey 29.4.

The figures show:

  • London’s seven-day rate fell to 45 as of March 3, down 36.5 per cent in a week.

  • Twenty-three boroughs have a rate below 50, with 13 below 40.

  • Haringey saw the biggest fall in confirmed cases, down 52.7 per cent in the week to March 3, followed by Bexley down 52.4 per cent and Bromley down 52.2 per cent.

  • Cases fell by at least a third in a week in 22 boroughs.

The speed of the disease’s retreat in London, and some other parts of the country, has led some MPs to question whether lockdown should be eased more quickly.

However, the Government has adopted a policy of lifting restrictions on a national basis, despite significant variations in the level of the virus across the country, with the seven-day rate in Barnsley still at 156.4 as of March 3, Leicester 154.4, Boston 151.1 and South Derbyshire 149.2.

Public health chief in the capital are urging Londoners to continue to follow the rules to drive down cases further, with lockdown having started to be eased yesterday with the re-opening of schools.

The real number of cases is significantly higher than confirmed infections, partly because so many people have the virus asymptomatically.

Gradually lifting the restrictions is set to put upward pressure on case numbers and scientists, health chiefs and ministers will closely watch the impact on Covid hospitalisations rise, with the vaccine roll-out expected to reduce them to a large extent.
