This locally-owned coffee shop expands into Charlotte with second shop in South End

A locally-owned coffee shop has opened for takeaway only in lower South End.

Burr & Berry Coffee opened its second Charlotte-area location at 4209 South Blvd. with drive-thru and walk-up service, according to a news release from commercial real estate company MVP Properties.

The stand-alone shop’s coffee and tea menu includes everything from frappes and lattes to Italian sodas and energy drinks. Signature drinks include Carolina Blonde — a latte with white caramel and caramel drizzle — and The Bee’s Knees — a latte with honey and brown sugar cinnamon. Food items on the menu include pastries and oatmeal.

The location, according to MVP Properties, is optimal for morning commuters.

“There’s a lot of great coffee in South End but we were looking to be somebody who is super convenient and drive-thru accessible,” Burr & Berry Coffee co-owner Jason Cowan said.

Cowan and his wife, Kelly, a native of Charlotte, opened the first Burr & Berry Coffee shop two summers ago at 1221 Transformation Lane in Indian Land, S.C., just south of Charlotte.

Burr & Berry locations combined now employ 13 full- and part-time workers.

The small, drive-thru concept is popular in the Pacific West, Cowan said, where he worked in the corporate world building brands for large companies like Starbucks. The couple moved to Charlotte to start their own coffee shop, Cowan said, with plans to continue to open more locations.

The 250-square-foot coffee shop buildings are built by the locally-owned company, Boxman Studios.

Keeping it local

Burr & Berry Coffee also works with other small businesses.

“We source pastries from local independent companies,” Cowan said. That includes the main pastry selection from Breadsmith in Fort Mill, as well as occasional offerings from Burney’s Sweets and More, Your Mom’s Doughnuts and Pepperbox Doughnuts.

“The most important thing for us is local, fast and kind,” Cowan said. “We want people to have a quick experience, and we are working every day to be a positive part of their day.”

The LoSo coffee shop is open daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
