Such Is Life: How POET Technologies (CVE:PTK) Shareholders Saw Their Shares Drop 67%

This week we saw the POET Technologies Inc. (CVE:PTK) share price climb by 18%. But that can't change the reality that over the longer term (five years), the returns have been really quite dismal. In that time the share price has delivered a rude shock to holders, who find themselves down 67% after a long stretch. Some might say the recent bounce is to be expected after such a bad drop. But it could be that the fall was overdone.

POET Technologies isn't a profitable company, so it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that POET Technologies shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 48% over one year. There's no doubt those recent returns are much better than the TSR loss of 20% per year over five years. The long term loss makes us cautious, but the short term TSR gain certainly hints at a brighter future.
