LeBron James Refuses to Stay at Trump Hotel

LeBron James will not be staying at any of Donald Trump’s hotels.

The Cleveland Cavaliers told the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday that the team has arranged alternate accommodations for James and other players who are refusing to stay at the Trump SoHo in lower Manhattan while the team is in town to play the New York Knicks.

James was a vocal Hillary Clinton supporter during the presidential campaign, penning an op-ed in support of the Democratic candidate in October. “When I think about the kinds of policies and ideas the kids in my foundation need from our government, the choice is clear: That candidate is Hillary Clinton,” he wrote.

The news comes after ESPN reported last month that at least three other NBA teams have parted ways with Trump-branded hotels in New York and Chicago after the election. The Milwaukee Bucks, Memphis Grizzlies and Dallas Mavericks will no longer stay at the president-elect’s hotels this season, according to unnamed sources.

James is not the first Cavs player to voice dissatisfaction with the outcome of the election. Reserve forward Richard Jackson suggested that other players may not be willing to visit the White House once Trump takes office. “There’s been other players with ‘scheduling conflicts’ as they like to call it — not necessarily a political stance,” he said. “But I could see other scheduling conflicts coming up.”

Reserve guard Iman Shumpert also told Complex that should the team win a second consecutive championship, he would not return for another visit.
