Land Rover Unveils New 2017 Discovery at Paris Motor Show

This week, Land Rover debuted its new fifth-generation 2017 Discovery premium midsize SUV in a recreated Lego model of the London Tower bridge presentation at the Paris Motor Show. The sleek premium SUV, which replaces the LR4, will seat 5 or up to 7 with the three-row option, and is slated to reach U.S. dealer showrooms in mid-2017 with a suggested price of about $51,000, according to the automaker. The Discovery initially was previewed as a concept at the 2014 New York Auto Show.

The British premium utility brand’s newest “full-size” Discovery is built with lighter aluminum construction, which reduces body weight by nearly 1,000 pounds in comparison to the outgoing LR4, and yet it can tow up to 8,201 pounds with an advanced tow assist feature. In addition, the Discovery has 82.7 cu. ft. of storage space and individually heated seats.

The new Discovery SUV will be powered by either a supercharged V-6 gasoline or turbocharged diesel engine mated with a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission. According to Land Rover, the new SUV will feature suspension and handling requirements to provide the driving performance capability for all kinds of terrain, with advanced driver-assistance technologies for added safety. The Discovery’s latest Terrain Response system features an increase in wading depth to more than 35 inches, the automaker says. In addition, communication connectivity has been enhanced in the new Discovery with up to 9 USB ports, 12-volt charging points, and a Wi-Fi hotspot for up to eight devices.

Land Rover says the new Discovery will also feature premium interiors that are made of durable, high-quality materials, including Windsor leather and oak veneer trim. An optional Dynamic Design Pack provides extra appearance features with a contrasting color roof, more athletic front and rear bumper designs, luxury leather upholstery, and a sporty steering wheel and pedals.

In addition, Land Rover, which is part of India’s Tata Group, will offer a limited-run ‘First Edition’ of 529 copies that will be available in the United States with exclusive features including unique etched map detailing on the aluminum trim for the doors and dashboard, unique badges, bold color choices, and a comprehensive list of standard equipment.
