Koninklijke Philips (AMS:PHIA) shareholders have endured a 63% loss from investing in the stock three years ago

Investing in stocks inevitably means buying into some companies that perform poorly. But the long term shareholders of Koninklijke Philips N.V. (AMS:PHIA) have had an unfortunate run in the last three years. Unfortunately, they have held through a 65% decline in the share price in that time. And the ride hasn't got any smoother in recent times over the last year, with the price 54% lower in that time. The falls have accelerated recently, with the share price down 14% in the last three months.

It's worthwhile assessing if the company's economics have been moving in lockstep with these underwhelming shareholder returns, or if there is some disparity between the two. So let's do just that.

Check out our latest analysis for Koninklijke Philips

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Koninklijke Philips saw its share price decline over the three years in which its EPS also dropped, falling to a loss. Due to the loss, it's not easy to use EPS as a reliable guide to the business. But it's safe to say we'd generally expect the share price to be lower as a result!

The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).

We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. It might be well worthwhile taking a look at our free report on Koninklijke Philips' earnings, revenue and cash flow.

A Different Perspective

We regret to report that Koninklijke Philips shareholders are down 53% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 13%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 9% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Koninklijke Philips better, we need to consider many other factors. Even so, be aware that Koninklijke Philips is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those is significant...
