What Kind Of Shareholders Hold The Majority In U.S. Bancorp's (NYSE:USB) Shares?

The big shareholder groups in U.S. Bancorp (NYSE:USB) have power over the company. Large companies usually have institutions as shareholders, and we usually see insiders owning shares in smaller companies. Companies that used to be publicly owned tend to have lower insider ownership.

Many institutions measure their performance against an index that approximates the local market. So they usually pay more attention to companies that are included in major indices.

We can see that U.S. Bancorp does have institutional investors; and they hold a good portion of the company's stock. This suggests some credibility amongst professional investors. But we can't rely on that fact alone since institutions make bad investments sometimes, just like everyone does. Institutional investors own over 50% of the company, so together than can probably strongly influence board decisions. We note that hedge funds don't have a meaningful investment in U.S. Bancorp. The company's largest shareholder is Berkshire Hathaway Inc., with ownership of 8.5%. In comparison, the second and third largest shareholders hold about 7.5% and 6.6% of the stock.
