Karen Gillan defends 'that outfit' from Jumanji reboot

Last year, after The Rock got a bit busy on his Instagram page, we all got our first glimpse of what the ‘Jumanji’ sequel is going to look like.

Though Mr Johnson published the shot – of he, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and former ‘Doctor Who’ star Karen Gillan – with much excitement, it was met with not a little grumbling.

This was mostly thanks to the really rather skimpy outfit being worn by Gillan which, commented some, seemed somewhat inappropriate for jungle trekking, and perhaps more appropriate for, say, a nightclub.

The shorts were short, the top revealing, while the male cast-members seemed rather more stoically dressed, and considerably more covered up.

Coming at a time when there’s been much talk of the message that objectifying women in the movies gives to young women, not to mention the prevalence of sexism in Hollywood, Gillan tried herself to quell the uproar.

She tweeted in September: “Yes I’m wearing child sized clothes, and YES there is a reason! The pay off is worth it, I promise!”

Now Gillan has doubled down, telling the Hollywood Reporter when asked about the outfit: “I’ve experienced something similar when I worked on ‘Doctor Who’ and there was such an uproar about my costume when that was first revealed, so I thought it was happening all over again.

“But I have to say, I’d never take on a role that was truly gratuitous for no reason. There’s a really valid reason why she’s wearing that. My character is really not happy about it!”

Though once more the point still appears to have been missed here, as however unhappy her character is about wearing it, she is still wearing the outfit.

We’ll find out whether the plot negates the objectification some fans are concerned with on December 29 when it’s released in the UK.
