Kansas City under tornado watch through Sunday evening as storms brew over Missouri

Kansas City, along with most of Missouri, is under a tornado watch until 10 p.m. Sunday night.

The tornado watch includes most of the state, with the exception of the northernmost counties, southeast Missouri and the Bootheel region, according to the National Weather Service.

A tornado watch is issued when “conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes in and close to the watch area,” according to the weather service.

Hail up to the size of a lime and wind gusts up to 75 mph are also possible, according to the weather service.

In an update on Twitter at 2 p.m. Sunday, the weather service wrote that severe weather is still expected to hit the Kansas City metro this afternoon, with the severity of the storms increasing east of the metro.

“Not a whole lot has changed with timing and hazards,” they wrote. “Hail, damaging winds, and a few tornadoes are possible.Stay weather aware between now and 6 PM!”

Sunday’s high will be in the mid-70s, according to the weather service.
