Kansas City Chiefs acquire cornerback Mike Hughes in trade with Minnesota Vikings

Chiefs general manager Brett Veach is still busy adding pieces to their offseaon roster.

Veach struck a trade Thursday to bolster the defensive back position group, sending a 2022 sixth-round draft pick to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for cornerback Mike Hughes and a 2022 seventh-round pick, a source familiar with the transaction confirmed with The Star.

Hughes, who turned 24 in February, entered the league out of Central Florida as a first-round pick (30th overall) pick with the Vikings in 2018. But the Vikings recently declined to exercise a fifth-year option on Hughes, who likely became expendable after the team signed three-time All-Pro corner Patrick Peterson during free agency.

While Hughes has missed time because of injuries during his career, he has appeared in 24 games with seven starts in three seasons. In those games, the 5-foot-10, 190-pound Hughes totaled 67 tackles, two interceptions and 13 passes defensed.

The Chiefs absorb a player entering the final year of his rookie contract, but gain a cornerback who projects to compete for playing time in a low-risk/high-reward move.

Hughes, who can play outside and inside, joins a cornerbacks group currently consisting of Charvarius Ward, L’Jarius Sneed, Deandre Baker, Rashad Fenton, BoPete Keyes, Chris Lammons and undrafted rookies Marlon Character and Decaprio Bootle.

Ward and Sneed project as the Chiefs’ starting outside cornerbacks.

ESPN first reported the Hughes trade.
