Kamala Harris, America’s first female Vice President, has provided a lesson in sartorial diplomacy.

For today’s inauguration ceremony, Harris wore an amethyst-hued ensemble by Christopher Jean Rogers, one of America’s most promising burgeoning fashion talents.

Rogers, 27, who was the recipient 2020 CFDA American Emerging Designer of the Year, is young, Black and his designs have been championed by fashion-forward former FLOTUS Michelle Obama, Tracee Ellis Ross and Lizzo.

Yesterday, for a candlelight vigil at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool to honour the more than 400,000 lives lost to the COVID-19 pandemic, Harris wore a classic camel coat by New York-based label Pyer Moss.

The brainchild of Haitian-American designer Kerby Jean-Raymond, Pyer Moss was launched in 2013. In 2018, Jean-Raymond’s brand was awarded the CFDA Fashion Fund prize.

Hudson, the name behind Harris’ shoes, is another up-and-coming American designer, who hails from South Carolina. Not only was Michelle Obama also wearing a dazzling plum-coloured ensemble by Hudson at the inauguration, but Beyoncé and Amal Clooney have similarly thrown their weight behind him in the past too.
