I just looked into sending out my laundry and was shocked by the prices I found

(Flickr / Christian Senger) Is this how you like to spend your time? Me neither.

In my neighborhood, I often see trucks double-parked with the engines running, full of clean laundry and freshly-pressed dry cleaning.

Delivery services make perfect sense in the city, where a trip to the laundromat means lugging heavy bags of dirty clothes down the street.

As Business Insider's Libby Kane found out, delivery also saves you time: at least 80 minutes, if you're lucky and don't have to wait for machines to be available.

But I always assumed that paying someone else to do my laundry was a luxury that I couldn't afford.

So I was intrigued to find out that Delivery.com had added a new feature that allows you to compare prices for laundry pickup and delivery in your neighborhood.

If you've used Delivery.com to order food, alcohol, or groceries, you already know the drill: type in your address and a list of stores and restaurants will pop up, along with a rating.

Laundry and dry cleaning work the same way.

(Delivery.com) The "price compare" button automatically sorts laundromats in your area by cost.

To get a price estimate, you click on "Price Compare" at the top of the page.

Then you click on the icons for what you need to get dry cleaned (for instance, three shirts and a pair of pants), or enter the total weight of what you'll be sending out for wash-and-fold.

I was shocked by the variation in prices for my Brooklyn neighborhood. My rough guess was that I had ten pounds of laundry, and the estimates ranged from $8 to $87.50. Most fell in the $20-$30 range.

While I won't be going with either the cheapest or the most expensive alternative (the $8 laundry service has a one-star rating), I did notice that there were reasonable options that fell in the middle.

(Delivery.com) In my neighborhood, prices for laundry ranged from $8 to over $80.

For instance, one laundromat with a five-star rating charges $10 and offers free delivery. Usually, doing my own laundry costs $5 each week (in the form of quarters that I've hoarded in an empty jam jar), so paying an additional $5 for convenience seems worth it.

I haven't taken the plunge yet. But I suspect that once I start to outsource this simple but tedious task, it will be just like Business Insider's Jacqui Kenyon said: I'll never go back.
