Junya Watanabe Man Fall 2021

After presenting his last collection in the form of a look book, for fall Junya Watanabe staged a mini show at the Comme des Garçons offices in Tokyo. He worked with several workwear and accessory brands to create updated versions of classic, outdoorsy styles.

Watanabe placed outerwear center stage, with a jacket or coat as the focal point of nearly every look. He placed panels of Fair Isle sweaters on quilted coats and varsity jackets, and contrasted classic Carhartt canvas with corduroy. Other styles combined tweed blazers with bright red or yellow panels and zipper closures. They were combined with relaxed fit, ankle-length Carhartt pants in either baggy or straight-leg cuts.

Many pieces, including hats by Mühlbauer and shoes by Stepney Workers Club, featured lyrics from hip hop artist Loyle Carner’s song “Not Waving, but Drowning.” Other collaborations included Il Bisonte bags, and jeans by Levi’s. Watanabe also used artwork from album covers by artists including Emapea, Koralle, Stan Forebee, Saib and Yeyts as prints.
