Johnny Depp Told Pirates Of The Caribbean Exec 'All My Characters Are Gay'

Johnny Depp’s creation of Captain Jack Sparrow for the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ was, shall we say, unexpected in its style.

In a chat in front of an audience at the American Film Institute on Sunday night, Depp has discussed how it went down with Disney, the studio behind the behemoth of a franchise.

As he’s said in previous interviews, he feared that his outlandish, slurring, Keith Richards-esque interpretation of the character was going to get him fired from the set of the first movie.

“It trickled back to me somehow that, ‘Goddammit, Johnny Depp’s ruining the film! What is that thing? Is it drunk, is it gay?'” he told the audience.

Depp then went on to describe a meeting with an 'upper echelon’ executive at the studio, who gave him quite the grilling.

“What the f**k are you doing?” he recalled the exec saying at the time. “When they asked if it was gay, I said: ‘Didn’t you know all my characters are gay?’”

Touché, Mr Depp.

Depp has previously credited Keith Richards – who ended up playing Sparrow’s dad in 'POTC: At World’s End’ – with inspiration for Jack, along with Loony Tunes character Pepe Le Pew.

He admitted back in 2011 that he was nearly sacked from the movie series, telling Larry King: “They couldn’t understand what I was doing. You know?

“To the point where Disney wanted to - wanted to fire me. They didn’t understand the character. They were actually contemplating subtitling the film.”
